Warmed Over 305...What Do You Think About Trying?

If anybody's interested you can put a 400 crank (3.75"stroke) in the 305 block cheap , use the same rods and buy aftermarket pistons . I beleive Flatlander racing even offers the rotating kits for a good deal.

You will have a piston with an extremely high compression height. It would be much better off with 400 rods. You would also have to do some serious grinding on that crank. Hardly seems worth the cost and headache to me for what? 334 CID? Why not stroke a 350 if you're gonna go through that expense.

These cranks are becomimg more and more common, it's the same crank as the 383 which can be found for under $200. and keith black and silvolite offer pistons for this set-up . Personally I'm building the 383 but I'm just offering options for people with 305 blocks.

havent been on in a while but good stuff...so BUMP!

so i am thinking of starting the build off buying bolt on that will just pop over to a 350 if i so desire.

so:
-Edelbrock intake
-Holley carb
-Exhaust
-Heads if i can find a cheap set

then when it blows, i can rebuild it or go get the 350, its that low compression killing it so rebuild would be.
-machine block
-machine heads
-and then all those "little" goodies
and hopefully end with a high 10.x:1 compression ratio

the key to making a 305 run is be conservative. a good performance carb for a 350, wont work so well on a 305...or vice versa. stay small on the camshaft, with tight LSA.  305s are also sensitive to timing.

im new to this site, but i just finished my rebuilt 305 about 4 months ago. im only 18 so i didnt go all out trying to create a drag truck or anything. its rebuilt from the bottom up. my cam is a little big, but im building a 350 this summer. in all i spent about $2000 on rebuilding it. S/R Torquer heads, 2500-2700 torque converter, HVH throttle body spacer, injector spacer, custom air intake, comp cam (dont remember cam specs), headers, and dual super 40s for the exhaust. ive got a 12-bolt with posi and 3.08s coming in in 2 weeks.
