New member needing engine/tranny advice.
« on: June 15, 2007, 12:31:45 pm »
Hi all,

I'm a new member to the board.  I recently purchased a '81 Cheyenne.  It's basically a good straight truck that hasn't been hacked too badly although it does have the usual rusted out body panels and the engine and tranny have been rebuilt about 10yrs ago.  I've owned and wrenched on this series truck before but it's been almost 20yrs.  I would like to, over a period of time, eventually go through the whole truck and would like for you guys to share some experience with me.

The first thing that I'm considering is the engine and tranny.  It currently has a 305ci LE9 4BBL with a TH350 (I think).  I would like to build this truck to be an all around driver with good bottom end torque that gets decent MPG.  I'd like to be able to haul/pull what I want and maybe even put a slide-in camper on occasion.

 Would I be better off:

> just going through the stock engine/tranny and add a few enhancements (cam, intake, tranny kit, etc)

>swapping out to a 350ci with a TH400 (again with a few enhancements, maybe even building a 383)

>other suggestions?

I know that this covers a lot of areas but hey, I gotta start somewhere! ;D

Welcome to the board. ;D
I'd definitely go with the 383 stroker. Maybe a 700r4 for milage. Of course the TH400 would be stronger for hauling.
