6" lift questions
« on: July 03, 2007, 03:34:53 am »
Okay yalls, I desided to scrap the 2wd and build off an old 4wd a guy sold me. According to him (ahem) it is a 82 Shortbed missing the front clip and the bed haha. It has on it already a 6" skyjacker suspension lift with t-case drop, the steering arm and springs  ;D  looks like the $500 leaf spring kit from E-bay haha. But nonethe less.

What do I need to do to make sure I dont mess anything up on this? For starters I am having new front and rear driveshafts cut. But it looks like the brake lines are a smidge too short too  ;) . What else do I need? Anyone have experiance with this size of lift?

Not sure what you are asking "when you say what else do I need", but if the brake lines are too short you need to get longer ones.

You can buy a kit of three stainless braided brake lines 4", 6", 8", lift for around $100 / $150
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I was mostly checking to make sure I didnt need longer axles. Can I just reuse my stockers?

Longer axles ???
Not sure what you mean. There is only one length axle for a Chevy truck unless you consider the cab and chassis 14 bolt rear, and they are shorter / narrower not longer.

Why are you having new drive shafts cut if the t-case is already dropped?

a transfer case drop kit defininitely doesn't gurantee that your drivelines won't come apart with axle travel, all it does is help to correct the drive line angle to prevent busting the u-joints every couple hundred miles. if you want to do it right i highly suggest shelling out 75 bucks for a drop pitman arm and getting your drivelines lengthened at a driveline shop. if you go half-way, you'll be sorry in the long run.

Interesting..

I asked because I am wanting to do an 8" lift and I think I am convinced now that I will have to address the drive shaft issue by having mine lengthened correctly.

Surprising that companies like Superlift and Skyjacker don't offer lengthened driveshafts to go with the kits.  I suppose the differences in applications and axle suppliers are just too vast for them to justify the $$$ to develop the part.

At 8"'s you will definitely need to have your drivelines/brake lines lengthened.  The front will need to have the "crowns" (little nubs left over from the casting process) of the upper (closest to the t-case) ground down.  You can do this with a grinder at home.  Easier to do it with the front drive off the rig.
The rear you will want it professionally done.
Kit companies would be charging an additional $750+/- if they were to offer new drivelines.  Its not that big of a deal, but why should they when there are FAR better options out there...its not a R&D issue, but rather a cost-benefit issue.  Inevitably they would offer only the high chro-moly u-joints, with a bunch of foofy goodies that add up to nothing in the real world.  Go to a driveline shop and spend maybe $150 to get yours done right.
$750 or $150?  Which would you pick? (I used to work for 6 States BTW).
As for me...4" lift: had to lengthen my rear driveline, and go with extended brake lines.  I understand that many dont need to, but Im anal as all get out, and wanted it done RIGHT!  That, and when my wife goes wheeling in the snow I know that she wont hyperflex the lines/tear them out.  Also, ProComp has Earls doing thier lines (really good SS lines), and are the cheapest option I could find (4WPW's unfortunately).

Mine is lifted 4" up front and 5.5" in the back.
I couldnt get aftermarket extended brake lines for my dana 60 but I didnt need them. Just relocate your rubber brake lines lower on the frame and replace the metal lines with new custom bent ones. In the back do the same thing with your metal lines. Fabracate a longer bracket where the lines attach to your rear end.
BTW those 1/2 ton dana 44 or corp.10 bolts wont hold hold up to any off roading. That is with 35" tires.

Hey since basically you havnt started this build yet. Why not put one ton axles and driveshafts under it? 6" lift should have them unless your just mall crawling.
