TBI 87 only?
« on: July 12, 2007, 12:38:06 pm »
Searching for a k5 project and came from a 92 1500.  Is the 87 K5 the only TBI model?  Did it start sooner or were their mixed applications (you get get the year in TBI or carbbed?)

87-91 V series Blazers (square body style like the 73-87) were all TBI.  There may be some late '86's that had them but they were built later in the year.  I know of 2 people online that have a registered '86 with TBI.

Thank you for the quick reply, are these years harder to find?  Reason I am asking is id prefer a carbbed app, but I already have an edelbrock EFI Kit from my 92 and according to Edelbrock the kit is the same so if I find a TBI app, might be better for me.

I wouldn't say that they are harder to find, especially compared to the fulltop 73-75 version that are actually in good condition.  But I do find it hard to come across people willing to part with them.

Go here and search:  Just put in 1973 and 1991 with Blazer as the model ( or Jimmy)

here are some from your area:

Thanks for the links, little higher then I am wanting to spend (if its running around 1500 is where I am looking), but I did email one of those to see if they still have that (you can always talk somebody down).

Ive found a bunch under 1000 but need work (which doesnt bug me much).

Ill check the collector car site you gave me and keep digging.

The other option is a burban (but not my first), what are the negatives of the burb over the blazer?  (my need is for a tow pig/camping rig/semi mud, but nothing major)

Being the newer version they typically aren't going to be found for that little (at least around here) since they were insanely popular, and they were TBI, and were the last year that was availible with removable hardtop.

negatives for tow rig?  The negative to me would be the short wheel base of the Blazer and pulling something.
You can piratically camp IN a Suburban and you can pack a TON of stuff in them.  You generally can get Burbs Cheaper also.

I assume parts (fenders, grill, after market) for the burban are just as available as the blazers?  What kind of weight difference is there?  This project will pretty much be rhino lined outside and floors if the carpet is crap.  4-6 inch lift, and some 33s maybe some soft 8s (cheap wheels)

You should be able to get the ole burbs for the lower prices now due to gas approaching $10.00 a gallon. However, the price of gas doesnt mean much to me since i have a sheriff's car for work.

I love my 91 3/4 ton suburban 4x4.  It doesn't see much mud, but, it loves the beach in the outer banks of N.C.

The thing about these 'burbs is, for me, i love taking all my toys camping and have no problem fitting them in my burb. If I choose, i remove the rear seat and pack more in it.  Or, i just keep my rear seat in and keep my 12 inch subwoofers on it backed by my 1,000 watt amp.

Getting a little off the topic, point is, i love my burb.  I wasn't sure about the TBI at first, my other rig is a 79 Big 10 w/ 383 stroker engine.  I am used to the carbed engine, but, now, i have fallen in love with the TBI on this 91. Both trucks are set up for pulling (ie:external oil cooler, tranny cooler, class IV hitch and 7 pin plug, 4 core radiator). But, i always find myself taking the burb on my camping trips.

I think right now it might be a burb for me, the thing that tickled my fancy on the blazer was the top, but I can buy a ragtop for the burban.  Something that can tow a boat, be room for me my wife my son, my mom and step dad to all fit when we go camping plus all my camping and fishing gear seems like a blazer wont be able to tow it all.

Now just to find sites that sell aftermarket stuff for the burban.  Any ideas?

The site you are on sells parts for all 73-91 pickups.  What are you looking for?

I am sure someone has modified a suburban.  I have seen one "avalanche" one, bob the rear etc.

As for Rhino lining one, I am sure that has been done, but why if you plan to drive it often?  After it gets dirty, it is a PAIN to get it clean again.

im more talking about after market bumpers, slide guards, lifts etc ( i know the main brand sites, but want to comparison shop)

I just did some searching and might reconsider, maybe a flat black upper, rhino lower, not worried about the cost i can do it myself.
