Another Rocker Question
« on: August 28, 2007, 06:52:03 pm »
I have read most of the Rocker threads but still have questions, I will be Mig welding I have a Hobart 140 states it will do 24 gage to 1/4 so I think the heat should be fine.

Before I cut the old rockers how do I know were to cut just measure the new and go up that far? (they wont fit with the door on)

Butt Weld I am thinking if I cut the foot well out and the inner cab corner shouldnt I be able to get a piece in there to prevent burn through?

This is for a 76 Gmc C35 I will be pulling the cab off the frame so I was just going to cut what I needed off of the outer cab corner then when its off the frame do the cab corner is this ok ?

Be easy this is my first time doing rockers..

Thanks

You should only replace what is bad, you don't need to use the whole patch panel.
You should have the doors and fenders off to replace them correctly.
If the foot well and inner cab corner are not rusted I wouldn't cut them out. If you go by the theory cut them out to back the other to but weld well then you will have to cut a hole in the new rocker and cab corner to put a backer in to but weld the foot well, and inner cab corner etc.

Thanks I think I will need to use the whole Rocker the cab corners I might be able to save some the footwell is rusted were it meets the floor that might be able to be spliced.
I want to thank you again seems rockers are the most questioned thing.

Blazin

Thanks yes I have I think every piece but how does the inner connect to the outer rocker.
The inner rocker I have doesnt look like this one

http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=5661.0

I dont have a pic but if I try to slip it onto the rocker there is like a 1 inch gap not sure of what I am doing wrong.

Hopefully this weekend I will attempt the first side. More pics to follow

This is what I got

If I understand correctly the one you have is like the pic in the thread. I have only seen the one you refer to in the link. The one you have actually has part of the seat mound on it. I cant count how many times I would have liked one like that. The rocker goes over the inner by about an inch or so. If you look at the pictures I posted you will see how I drill holes in the flat part of the rocker / bottom door jamb area. I then weld the outer rocker to the inner rocker with these holes. What ever you do don't weld anything until you have self tap screwed all the parts to the ruck and installed your door . Then you can adjust the patch panels to fit correctly and make sure the door doesn't rub. Then just fill the screw holes with weld when you are done. If it helps you to picture it better the inner rocker is actually part of the floor pan when these are built on the assembly line.
