« on: September 10, 2007, 03:56:02 pm »
Can anyone tell me what model this truck is please. It has round headlights in a square grill if it helps!

Thanks

It appars to be a 75-78 based on the front signals and headlight bezels.  The VIN will tell you for sure.  You could also look at the glovebox sticker if it is still there if you want to know more.

That isn't the correct VIN for that truck, Crew Cabs were either 20 (3/4T) or 30(1T) series and the inline 250 was not availible on Crew Cabs and I would imagine it doens't have one in it. CCD149F465240 breaks down to:
C=Chevrolet
C=Conventional Cab
D=250 6cyl.
1=10
4=Pick-up
9=1979
F=Flint
Build Sequence=465240

As far as parts go anything from 73-80 will work for the majority of the parts especially sheet metal. (short of doors which are 73-76 and 77-91)  You can even use 81-87(91) parts for everything but the fenders forward.

Done some digging!  It appears the truck I have is a bitzer! bits of this and bits of that!

The truck was built in the US and we think transported to an American Air Base over here in the UK. They used to then ship crates of parts over to keep them running. If most of the parts are interchangeable I guess thats what happened!

So I have a '73-'78 Chevy/GMC pick up from various sources!

I think it was Johny Cash that sang about a 49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57 automobile!

Do these pick-ups have a separate chassis number different from the vin number? Any idea where I'd start looking for it?

Any guess at a model? Not sure what the K1500    C10  relates to over there.

cheers

C means 2 wheel drive, K means 4 wheel drive.
10 is 1/2 ton, 20 is 3/4 ton, 30 is 1 ton.
 Example a K30 is a 4x4 1 ton.
 Being a crew cab, and buy the looks of the pic, it is 2 wheel drive so it would be a C20.
 If the VIN doesn't break down right maybe someone changed the plate?
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

You either have a C20 or C30 (only way to get a crew cab in 2wd)
The chassis will be stamped either on the side of the frame rail, or on top of it. (under the cab where you can't see it without removing the cab.

C=Chevrolet     GMC
C=Conventional Cab      Crew cab
D=250 6cyl.           7.4 V8
1=10                 not sure
4=Pick-up         Correct!!
9=1979            Correct at a guess
F=Flint    is this a colour?
Build Sequence=465240      does this matter!

Nice guys many thanks- looks like I'll be underneath it this weekend with a wire brush!  The whole cab will be lifted off at a later date for the full works-But deffo 2wd :)

Does the US chassis number differ much from the UK style of layout?

Sorry for all the Q's

C=Chevrolet     GMC  This is the Division, GMC = G
C=Conventional Cab      Crew cab  This is the chassis type, C= 4x2 K=4x4
D=250 6cyl.           7.4 V8  If it has a Big Block in it it will be Z or S depending on the year

1=10                 not sure  Yours would be either 2(3/4 Ton) or 3 (1 Ton)

4=Pick-up         Correct!!
9=1979            Correct at a guess  Yours based on the outside (front clip) could be either a 77 or 78 if the majority of pieces are correct. A picture of the hood would eliminate either 79-80 or 73-78.
1) clear turn lenses (76-80)
2) blacked headlight bezels (73-74)
3) 10 grille openings (77-80)

F=Flint    is this a colour?  This is the assembly plant where it was built  Flint Michigan.

Build Sequence=465240      does this matter!  Not really unless you have number 100001 which would have been the first one built.

Chassis number?  The number I am talking about is the actual VIN number like above which is stamped on the chassis.

If it is on the frame it should look like this for example if it was a 1979 GMC 3/4T CrewCab with 7.4L engine built in Flint Michigan  GCS249FXXXXXX...

You can look up VINs here for whatever you find: http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/VIN.htm

9=1979            Correct at a guess  Yours based on the outside (front clip) could be either a 77 or 78 if the majority of pieces are correct. A picture of the hood would eliminate either 79-80 or 73-78.
1) clear turn lenses (76-80)

F=Flint    is this a colour?  This is the assembly plant where it was built  Flint Michigan.

 :-[  sorry to sugest Flint was a colour!

deffo got black bezels (if a bezel is the colour behind the light unit!) , clear turn lenses (under headlights) its got 10 grille openings. The hood is virtually flat with a ridge running from the front centre towards the windscreen about an inch wide. it also tapers about 6" either side towards each fender (wings?)  I'll try and get a pic but its raining as always!

What's a front clip? sorry! ???

I'm sure I'll get the hang of the terms you guys use!

thanks again for all the help

Haha gotta love language differences between American English and English English! :P Basically "Front clip" refers to the front of the vehicle (the grille and such)
