Shift Indicator Cable
« on: September 11, 2007, 09:59:35 pm »
On the old 74 3/4 with the 3 speed auto trans the needle for the shift indicator doesn't move. I did a search on the site here and found out there is a cable that moves it so I would think my cable is broke. Anyone know where I can get one at? Thanks!

First of all welcome to the site. ;D
Just read your other post about needing a heater control also, Sounds like its time to hit a wrecking yard. Check with the guys on the PARTS WANTED board at the bottom here. Or last but not least go on Fleabay. You can find all sorts of used parts and some NOS stuff on there.

I would first try taking apart the shift indicator and check it out. I have fixed 2 of them by taking the little metal clamp thing (sorry tired) thats supposed to be on the end of the cable and very gently prying it back open then reinserting the cable. Squeeze it down carefully then put a drop of super-glue gel on it and let it dry good. Use a thin wipe of grease on the part where it slides around a corner and put it back together. There is some adjustment in it so check out that all your gears are indicated correctly.

They are really easy to work on. Just take your time and watch how everything comes apart.
Good luck.
