Door Replacement compatability
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:04:48 am »
I have a 76 Crew Cab 4x4. The two right side doors are not in the best of shape.  I do not have power windows or lock and would like to have them.  I've found a 88 Suburban that I can have the doors.  They have power window and locks and are in much better shape than mine.  They look like they should fit my 76.  The Driver side doors have been sanded down to the bare metal while the passenger side has the existing original paint.

  My questions are:
1.  How challenging is adding the power window and lock to my 76?
2.  Will I need the fuse box from the Suburban?
3.  What should I be aware of on the doors sanded down to bare metal?
4.  What other concerns should I have that I haven't thought about?

Thanks,

Tom

You will only need the wire harness from the door to the fuse box. Its a plug and play deal. The power stuff plugs into the fuse box.
 Is the bare metal rusted?
If its bare you will need to prime it with self etching primer, and urethane primer. If you plan on leaving it in primer for any length of time you should top coat it with epoxy primer.
If its rusty you will need to sand it down with 80 and or 180 grit on a DA sander. Then spray it with POR 15 or Chassis Saver paint. Then prime over that with urethane and or epoxy primers.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Thanks,

The doors have some very minor rust from just being exposed to the Arizona elements since the sanding.  I may not install those two doors until I am ready to paint the entire truck.  If I  wait to install, then i will store them in the garage. Regardless I will sand and prime but will I need to apply the epoxy primer if I store them?

I would use the epoxy primer even in storage.

I would like to say thanks to all those who answered my post.  I was not able to respond back as I went in for an emergency operation and am just now out of the Hospital.  Won't be able to do any work on the truck for awhile but as least I'm alive. :)

You will need the door lock relay out of the donor vehicle.    want 80.00 dollars for the door lock relay if you miss it.

Thanks,

What does the relay look like?  I think I have it.  We pulled all the wiring from the fuse box.  Won't be able to check to see for a couple of week while I recuperate.
