power steering not functioning
« on: October 14, 2007, 10:06:44 am »
I just bought an 1980 c10 2wd w/350.  Nice truck, all original....needs some TLC.  The power steering is not working at all.  It was really low on fluid so I filled it up, but it made no difference.  I'm not real sure how the system works.  I was thinking I should start by replacing the pump (this one leaks pretty bad).  If that doesn't work....what's my next step?

Thanks,

T.J.

Great place to start since it is leaking anyway.  Post your results.  If it were me I would flush out the power steering gear box as well.

if your pump runs low for too long it wont ever work right again. also check your pressure and return line because the connections can be leaking as well. you can pick up the pressure line for about $15 and the return line is just rubber hose.

I ran into a problem when replacing the bracket that goes between the pulley and the pump wouldn't fit.  When I sat the new pump next to the old one, the 4 (only 3 are used) bolt holes on the front of the pump are not aligned the same way on both pumps.  It appears that the actual pump ahas been rotated about 20 degrees off center from the housing(reservoir).  Has anyone ever encountered this?  Well, I'll have to take the new pump back to the autoparts store tomorrow and get one that's not screwed up.

to flush, i would go ahead and get the right pump and hook it up. fill up the resevoir.  unhook the return line and get a plastic jug of some type.  run the return line in that jug.  have someone run the engine for about 4 seconds or so.  See if the old fluid is coming out of the steering box.

Top off the resevoir and repeat. Do this until you think all old fluid is out the system, including the high pressure line.

Well.....good news....I finally got the right pump and got it installed.  Now the truck has good working power steering.  Thanks for the help.
