Yeah..buy a set of chains and forget about studs. When I used to have my '84, right after I got it actually, it had a set of brand new studded tires on the back, and it was just going into winter..I swore by em..until I had an issue with one going flat, so I put the normal tires/wheels back on the back rather than run slightly off size tires, and the worn down all season tires did just as well on snow and ice as the studded tires did. Chains are a bit of a pain to put on every time you need em, but imo, studded tires don't help much, if at all. Not to mention they'll probably only last you one winter of daily driving before the studs are worn down completely.
