OK "Studs".......

I'm the new kid on the block here in central Oregon and the locals are sold on studded tires.  I don't see much traffic here on the board about studs and I know squat!

OK for snow you need a smaller profile, but I have to support the weight don't I?

what would be the best rim/tire size for a '87 short step C10?  I am thinking about buying rims,too
b/c my 31x10.5x15s are just fine other than ice.  Besides noise, any feelings about studs?

Yeah..buy a set of chains and forget about studs. When I used to have my '84, right after I got it actually, it had a set of brand new studded tires on the back, and it was just going into winter..I swore by em..until I had an issue with one going flat, so I put the normal tires/wheels back on the back rather than run slightly off size tires, and the worn down all season tires did just as well on snow and ice as the studded tires did. Chains are a bit of a pain to put on every time you need em, but imo, studded tires don't help much, if at all. Not to mention they'll probably only last you one winter of daily driving before the studs are worn down completely.

Thanks....   In Colorado I never needed studs, but I never had 'em either.  I'll stick with chains.

If Oregon is like Washington when it comes to having Studs on your Car/Truck, you would need them front and rear if you run them.  No tire place around here, will sell you only one pair and mount them up for you(Has been too much of a Liability in the past ).   It's Great too that if you get pulled over by a Stater or a County Mountie, the right ones will be more than Happy to write you up for "Improper Equipment" if you only have them on the rear too!

Chains really are so much easier to use then most think, and offer more control.  When using them, just take your time while driving, and be sure to use slack adjusters(Bungee Sidewall add ons) to help keep the movement down to a minimum.   Personally I like using the $3-10 Bungee add ons, as opposed having to pay $200- 2K for body R&R

The police around here put studded tires on the back end ONLY, on the first day of November, and don't take em off til May. The Crown Vics were ALWAYS getting stuck with the studs, I haven't seen whether or not the Impalas get stuck much..
