i have a buddy with a 84 trans am that has a 5speed. he wants a 700r4 and i have been wanting a 5 speed. would this swap be compatible. i know ill have to get a different pedal system, i think. ive never done this, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

What is it going behind? The 5 speeds in 84 F-bodies were WEAK.
You are going to need A LOT more than just a pedal....

You need a pilot bearing in the crank, new flywheel new clutch assembly, Pedal assembly for a hydraulic setup, might have to make a crossmember for the trans mount. What are you hoping to gain from the switch/why do you want to switch? Does the TA run? T5 weren't offered behind 350's from the factory (except in Canada)

ive wanted my truck to be a stick since i got it. i love driving a stick. the trans am runs, but he is putting in a 350 and wants an auto. i came here for advice, and it seems like the T5 isnt the right choice for this. if its not a good tranny for a truck with a 350 then i wont do it. Thanks for the advice.

If you aren't planning on banging the gears and drag racing it, the trans should be fine. If you do plan to abuse it, I would look elsewhere. Going from an Auto to a manual or vice versa is a big dollar item. If his is all there you could do it, just don't expect a 23 yr old tranny to take a hammering..

i understand. but it wont take any less of a hammering than my 700r4 would it. plus im not gonna drag it, its a stock motor, just with dualies and a thorttle body spacer. thats it. but i am 17 and like to burn tire and take off fast.

Kyle, I believe there are some bellhousing/fork issues also on some of the F-body's, the tranny is tilted on the bellhousing. You may want to do a search for general T-5 swaps before you get involved to see which one you have available. Lorne

Yes it would take less than a 700R4. Unless you are neutral dropping the 700R4, the T5 sees all the power comming off the back of the motor. It doesn't have all that fluid to cushion the blow. I am not saying don't swap it, if you just do an occational side step of the clutch you probably will be ok, but if you are going to pull it, I would have it gone through first and replace all the worn pieces.
I think the 84 F-body was hydraulic actuated, but I would DEFINITELY check. You would be better off if it is. I will be running a F-body style scattershield on my 454..
