forward rear hangers?
« on: February 10, 2008, 11:19:05 pm »
Anyone know where to find a pair. All I've been able too find are 4wd ones which i believe are taller?? Could I mod 4wd ones to work without putting in tooo many hours? The reason for needing them is the prevous owner hacked them up and welded the 2in higher on the frame rail as part of his lowering plan (did a piss poor job too)and now i want to go back to stock. I could cut them off and restore them (I am a TIG welder by trade) but if I could find a pair for a reasonable price id rather save the time to work on other parts of the truck. thanx

Andy, Did you check with the local dealer? Last I checked the 4wd ones were still available for around $40, maybe the 2wd are too?  Good Luck, Lorne

No, last time I called the dealer looking for some parts for this truck (78' heavy half) just to see if by chance they had it. The dude was a little bit a of a jerk and kinda laughed saying they don't sell stuff for vehicles that old. I think I am going too go ahead and call another dealer for these though. The worst they'll say is no, right?

Anyway if anyone has knows of anything please let me know..

thanx,
Andy

Andy, You need to get hooked up with a good guy at a dealer, I'm not sure just how you go about it, most of the parts guys don't want to be bothered (I own a bodyshop & spend about 10 grand a month for GM parts so I have a little edge on it). There are many more parts than you would expect still available for these trucks.   Good Luck, Lorne

Your right, I know there's tons of stuff out there sitting in store rooms. My problem is just finding it and or someone willing to help locate it. Oh well sooner or later ill get there.. I still would like to find out exactly how much of difference there is between the 4wd and 2wd ones, and whether or not I should count those out totally.

So in the time being if anyone should come across a set let me know and Id greatly apreciate it.

thanx,
Andy

Are you wanting to know what the difference is between the front hangers 2wd vs 4wd?  They are longer to give the truck lift, you can't use them.  I am pretty sure any salvage yard could get you some...

I bought a front spring hanger for an 86 4x4 online and I had to get the part no. from gm dealership first, then go online and enter it.

I need the driver's side rear, spring hanger that attaches the shackle to the frame anyone got one or know where to get it or a part no.? it's an 84 2wd short bed 1/2 ton.

I removed a pair from my 1/2 ton 2wd stepside about a year ago.  (I lowered the truck with hangers and shackles.)  They've been sitting on a shelf in my workshop since.  If you are interested, PM me, I'll take a few pictures and send them to you.  They might be just what you want.

Steve, I got a chance to check these out. The part numbers are gone from the system, appears they are no longer available through regular GM ordering. I saw where a couple guys mentioned from ones being available & maybe aftermarket? Check with Chris & maybe an ebay search for some good used crossmember parts. Sorry, Good Luck with the project, Lorne

well the rear most frame hanger for our 84 is definately discontinuted they told me it yesterday but you can catch some gm dealers with them. I just ordered mine from TN yesterday.

They are the one for the shackle to mount to the frame..

gm part no. 471698

that's good for either side on back of a 2wd and will fit a 78 also. Not sure on anything bigger like 4x4 3/4 ton and so on.

Right now on ebay though there is a complete set front and rear hangers for a 4x4 and all the front ones for the front end too. Now I have the gm part no. for the front hanger on an 86 k10 somewhere I'll try to find it and post.
