3-way manual fuel switching valves
« on: March 21, 2008, 09:16:08 pm »
Hi folks - have a quick question for you.  My '73 C20 has dual tanks with the manual 3-way valves for switching between them.  I'm not completely certain about orientation based on which tank I'm drawing fuel from.  There are two valves - one for the supply lines and one for the returns.  Presently both are oriented in the same direction, and the curbside tank is being drawn down.  I'm guessing that in order to select the streetside tank, I'd just have to reverse the orientation of both of them (180 degrees), is this correct?  There is a separate switch on the dash which switches the sending unit.

We had a '70 CST 20 Longhorn when I was about three, and I vaguely remembered the valves, and the fact that my dad had labeled what was what using one of those old time label maker things, but that's about it (probably because I was three and more fascinated with Big Bird than fuel delivery). After that, our '74 and '76 model trucks had the black rocker switch that controlled everything.

Thanks, Dave

Hi bake315. Glad your ok. Those valves like to give people fits when they get corrosion around the wire connections.

Wire connections?  Ya got me puzzled there.  I do have a switch that connects to the sending unit in each tank.  So far that's been pretty accurate, but that is all it does.  What I had to figure out was which way to orient the manual valves so that fuel came from the tank I expected it to come from.  In the pics below, the valves are oriented so that fuel is coming from the streetside tank.

I tell ya, the only thing on this truck that isn't "manual" is the transmission. LOL  But you know what?  I like it that way!
