700R4 90 Burb
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:00:26 pm »
My brother has a 90 V1500 burban.  His 700R4 went out about 25 miles from home.  ( he was just on his way back with his wife and 4 girls from Kentucky back to north central Illinois ) He has a fresh rebuilt 2wd 700R4.  I have heard that you can red neck it and cut the tail shaft down to work with the transfer case.  There is now way you would have enough splines is there?  Anyone done this?

I suggested he send both to a trans shop and have the tail shafts swapped out.  I wouldn't think it would cost all that much to have this done.  Any thoughts??????

To send both back and have it swapped required tearing them all the way down.  If I (personally) was to do that, I would just have them put it back together new...

The photos are not to scale
(they look the same length, but they are not)

The 4x4 output shaft is shorter

If you cut the 2wd shaft, you will not have any spines
