6x9's in the doors

i want to put some 6x9's in the doors (84 gmc 3/4ton)...i was wondering how people routed the speaker wire....if you have any i would like some pictures...please and thanx

That is pretty neato...I must have missed that issue.

I always tried to stay away from putting anything other than tweeters in the doors of these trucks because everyone I have dealt with you had to slam the door to get it to close right. And after awhile that will take a toll on a speaker. And plus I don't like cutting the doors up.

I always tried to stay away from putting anything other than tweeters in the doors of these trucks because everyone I have dealt with you had to slam the door to get it to close right. And after awhile that will take a toll on a speaker. And plus I don't like cutting the doors up.

If you rebuild your hinges, properly adjust them,rebuild/replace & Properly Adjust your latches and strikers,along with keeping them properly maintained, you should be able to close your doors without slamming.....  Add a firm mounting bracket/brace, and some sound deadner, that too will also help cut down on the flexing & vibration that will shorten the speakers life(Note, would also recommend a Moisture Barrier for the back of the speaker when mounting in the doors as well, as that will also extend their lives in that type of eviroment)...  Limiting those, will also help with the quality of your over all speaker sound staging...

Most speakers now a days are manufactured to be put anywhere, and ran without or with an enclosure....  That is all within reason though, as you still will shorten their lives, and decrease your possibilty of having an optimal sounding stage(Competion or Personal Quality), if your mounting area of choice isn't up to par....   The Simple Suggestions that I made will go a long way, so long as other things don't come into play(You can still get around alot of that, but again within reason as well)....

In spite of the topic being a tad old..I have to add that, while hiding that 6x9 in the door is a clever stealthy idea, both their headunit AND speaker installs are what I would call hack jobs..If somone had paid for that kind of work, I would have encouraged them to get a refund and bring the truck to me or another installer with half a brain, to have it fixed.

Lol Yeah I agree, and the sad thing is that was a Mag Article.....  I'm by no means a Pro, but have always tried to do a Half-Way Factory/Stealth Style install, when adding anything Aftermarket to keep down the Hack Job Look ......

I routed mine from the dash between where the dash mounts to the side of the cab and ran it under the door seal (the piece that goes all the way around the door opening) (I did this on my 77 and had no problems in 10 years or so) and then to a hole i drilled in the door.  Be careful where you drill this hole, make sure you're not drilling through the door support inside.  If you do you will need many drill bits because the inner brace is at an angle and will snap drill bits in about 2 seconds.  Here's a pic of the speaker mounted in the door.  Look right above the switch that turns on the courtesy lights when the door is , thats the speaker wire.

I put power windows in mine and routed it throught the gromlet so no chaffing of the wire but I have 6.5 and built a pod for it take a look and see what you think
