Chevy C20 Camper Special Cruise Master system Question
« on: April 26, 2008, 05:42:44 pm »
Ok Guys I have a quick question. I just got a 76 C20 with a 454/turbo 400 from my father in law for parts. I am swapping the cab onto my 76 GMC K15 stepside. My cab is all rusty and the firewall is shot. The new cab has a complete AC system still charged with freon. The C20 cab is pristene. No rust at all, nothing wrong still is the original color ( gold )

Anyway I have a SM465 (4spd) with a 350 in my K15. My stepside is a 4X4. Well while I was pulling parts for the cab swap I noticed what appears to be a cruise control unit. I have done some research and it is a factory option. They call it Cruise Master. The turn signal switch is the control for the unit.  It looks to be in perfect shape. All speedo cables, wires, and vaccuum lines are all there in perfect shape. My wife (it was her family's truck) said it worked the last time she drove the truck 10 years or so ago. Everything on the truck is in great shap really. I dont belive it will work on my K15 with a 4spd, correct?? From what I can tell it is only for auto trans.

Well can anyone give me any info on it? I would appreciate it. If it doesnt work on this truck I may save it till I have a vehicle to use it on. I may also part with it if I have no use for it.

Any info would be great guys. During my research I only saw this item on Camaros, Vettes and Monzas.

Thanks in advance.

Aside from the  Cruise Control Cable to the Trans Might be different between an Auto and Manual Trans, I don't know why you couldn't swap it over onto your truck...  If it has a Rubber Vacuum Diaphram in the System, I would go over it with a fine tooth comb, as I remember my Father's '79 Monte Carlo always had problems with its(Despite it looking almost new, it was fairly rusted internally when I took it apart :o)...

auto vs std shouldn't matter, they just hooked up via the speedo cable.  Generally they were never any good at controling speed.

I have one of those on my 78 c20 and all it will do now is floor the gas and hold it there.  It'll be interesting to know, if you get it working, what you did to it....  On my 78, when it was new cruise control was a $140 dealer installed option.  I still have the tag they hang on the turn signal lever after installation...
Here it is...
