replacing th350 with a NV3500 5 speed
« on: May 29, 2008, 04:12:15 am »
hello. i have a 1979 chevy c10 stwpside shortbed. it currently has a 250 I6 and a th350. i bought the truck very recently with the plans of putting my 1999 454 roller motor in the truck. my tranny is now slipping and i am in need of making this my daily driver very soon. i would like to make it a 5 speed because i like the idea of the overdrive, although i would go for a standard style 4 speed without the oerdrive if need be.

i know that the s10s and the v8 1/2 ton pickups used the nv3500's, so it should fity pretty simple. BUT....... will the nv3500 hold up to a 330hp big block. im keeping the motor plain stock with the excepion of a set of headers and a nice exhaust setup. other than that, im not changing anything bout the motor. this is the same motor they used in the 3500 HD's.

im pretty handy with a wrnech, being an ex marine mechanic certainly helps. does anybody know if the drive shaft will need to be altered or if this should even be attempted.

any input would be greatly apreciated.

thanks a million,

mike in seminole, florida

I see theres an update for the 3500 . I think they were jumpin out of 5th I think Can check out http://www.smartpartsauto.com/manual_transmission_nv3500_chevy.html
..I have a 6 speed manual transmission out of a 5 ton I believe its bell is a part of the trannie. Its out of an isuzu but mates up to a SBC , I was gonna try it but the driveshaft doesnt match up alot bigger shaft. The farmer that had it blew the motor and when they replaced the motor it had a new trannie on it And I ended up with the old trannie , weighs about 3-400 lbs ..Bruce
Hii There , Stating another project , an 83 c10 2wd  .Frame etc is all good and have to replace dash pad and seat , some body work and Paint Prob flat blk wth a clear cote to seal it.Ill keep in touch with updates ..Bruce

I don't know allot about them, but I think you will need to do something with the drive shaft as they are pretty long trans. You will need to get the floor center section out of a 74 - 87 standard trans truck, cut your center out and bolt that one in. You will need the clutch brake pedal assembly from a 85 ish to 87 truck, the master cylinder, reservoir, lines, & slave cylinder from the 3500. I have also heard the input shaft is the week area of those transmissions?

Welcome aboard as I see its your first post. Stop in to the welcome thread and introduce your self etc. Harold.

You don't want a NV3500 out of a S10 behind a BBC, it is the torque that breaks them not HP.  The 1/2T fullsize trucks used the HD NV3550, or a T5 out of a F-body would be a better choice, but if you plan to put a BBC in it, I would shop for something that will live behind it and what is listed won't last long if you plan to abuse it often.
