Texas Registration Question...

i was thinking about getting my Jimmy this weekend and i had a registration question.  see, i haven't lived in Texas too long, about 2 years, and i haven't registered a vehicle here besides newer ones.  i can't remember if my Jimmy has a smog pump on it or not.  i know it did originally (well, i think it did-anyone know how to find out?) but i can't recall if it does now or not.  my question is this...with this being a 1978 will they fail me on the inspection because it doesn't have one?  i don't live in an emissions county but from reading over the inspection checklist it looks like i might have to have one.  i would really hate to have to install one just to pass the darn inspection...

You should be okay, my 1984 has an air pump but I've seen a pretty identical truck but without the smog pump, go figure! Do your exhaust manifolds have the plugs for the air injection? It should be listed under the hood on a sticker (which may not be there). You shouldn't have a problem, unless it's a DOT inspector and not just a dude at a mechanic shop or sticker store.

edit: I've even seen smog pumps missing from trucks with 350's that I know should have had them. I don't see a place to inject air into the exhaust manifolds so I assume that maybe the 350 burned cleaner?

A smog pump is shown on Autozone.com for a 1978 2WD Jimmy with a 305 so it may have come with one.

yea, GM was weird with their use of smog pumps.  honestly, i don't have the Jimmy here yet to look to see what it has/doesn't have.  it's a '78 Jimmy 4x4 with a 350.  i'm gonna go to a small shop to get it inspected...

If you trust them, you should be okay, because they probably don't care and depending on the age of the mechanic, he may not even know what a smog pump looks like.  .

LMAO, you may be right...i sure hope i don't run into any trouble...i'm not so worried about getting the smog pump, i'm more worried about finding the factory bracketry...might have to do some j-yard scouring...

I would take it anyway, the worst thing is you have to put it on if it fails the inspection. Inspection is like $14.50.

oh yea, i'm taking it no matter what.  worst case scenario i'll change my license back to Alabama or to Arkansas and i'll skip all this inspection crap...

Im sure you wont fail inspection, I was runnin a straight piped 350 in my 3/4 ton that billowed out smoke when you started it(worn valve guides), had all the a.i.r. injection plugged by the previous owner, and balding front tires and passed without issue  as long as you have all working lights and nothing too dangerous looking, you should be fine, ive never seen an inspector around here crawl underneath a 25 year old truck to check if it has cats or not

The number one reason for failure that I have had is the air cleaner. It has to be the original snorkel style with the heat riser tube. Seriously, that is a killer. I have seen them pass vehicles with not air pumps, no cats when they obviously should have cats, but open air cleaner, no way. I have an 81 that I can't get inspected because with the bigblock, and intake setup, I can't get the stock air cleaner on and shut the hood. Alot of young kids doing inspections that don't know any better on the rest of the stuff, they just know tha air cleaner trick. If you don't drive it alot, get the antique tags,  Haggerty insurance, and enjoy. No inspections required. Plates cost $50 and last 5 years.

I had my 1980  C-10 inspected in Tarrant County in December.  It has no emmisions equipment and no cats.  All they inspected was the safety equipment.  The guy who did the inspection said that 1982 and older aren't tested for emmissions and aren't checked for emmissions equipment.  He didn't even open my hood.

why don't you get a cowl hood?  they look slick and that should solve your problem.  i can't get antique tags because i plan to drive the pee outta this truck.

I have a cowl hood, and even measured a 4 inch hood, but the snorkel hits. I have a base from an earlier Chevelle that sits lower that I will modify to fit the top. We'll see how that goes, but I don't drive it that much, so the antique tags will work once I finish the restoration. The old girl have over 500,000 on her and spent most of it's life doing farm and ranch construction, so she is getting the easy life now.(Except when I feel like burnng a little rubber)

The guy I got the motor from said it dynoed at 540hp/620 ft/lb torque. She does run. Traction is unheard of. I believe i am running a less hp because I am running the smaller headers for torque. All in all it is overkill for a 3/4 ton but it is my wifes truck and I can't talk her out of the motor. I want it for my choptop, but I have permission to build another.
