Fuel gauge
« on: July 11, 2008, 09:08:32 am »
Hey fellas,
I have a '74 chevy full size pickup. I just replaced the fuel tank sending unit because my gauge wasn't reading true. Only to find out it was the gauge. Not the unit. Seeings no junk yards around here have a fuel gauge for my truck, I have to buy a sunpro from Whitney( I know I know). Would anybody out there have an original that actually works and or how hard is it just to hook up the one I bought?

You should be able to find a fuel gauge that works.  Did you test everything before taking it apart?

No sir I did not. Could you please tell me exactly what needs to be tested. I'm not really smart at these kinds of things so I'm getting my brother to help me. I just thought it was either a bad sending unit or gauge.

Does anyone know if an '85 - '86 fuel gauge will work in a '74 dash. I'd really appreciate one of those gauges if it does. Thank you very much zieg

It will work. It will have a different font and say "Unleaded Fuel Only", though.

Hey zieg,

I'd like one of those fuel gauges. Just let me know what I have to do to get one.

If it has dual tanks it could also be a short in the switching valve.  That's what it was on mine.  Of course it's always the most expensive part that needs replacing with my truck >:(.

It's not dual tanks. Good thought though. The gauge would float back and forth teribbly. Now it just kinda sits on the full mark. When I dropped the tank to put the new sending unit in I noticed I had less than a 1/4 tank of gas. I know what you mean about the expensive parts. Mine always seem to be the pain in the rear ones. >:(

If it acts the same way on either tank chances are it is the gauge.

Mine is doing the same thing, I switch tanks and it stays at 1/4 on the gauge. even tho one take is full and one is empty. Do you still have a extra gauge?
