You may want to look at some different heads. Aftermarket or have yours built. I have a set of Trick Flows on my small block. The key is to get the engine to "breathe". Good free flowing exhaust and if possible gasket match the mating surfaces on the intake and heads as well as a port and polish if you use the stock heads. Use roller rockers if possible. Don't go cheap if you choose to do this as the cheaper "generic" roller rocker can be of poor quality.

Look at an ignition upgrade as well. Once you get everything flowing well you want to be sure you get a good spark to ignite the fuel in the chambers. Larger tube headers and exhaust will also help.

Once you build the power you have to be able to get it to the rear wheels. All this will be wasted if your gearing isn't good in the rearend.

The only other thing and probably the most important is to us good fasteners to hold everything together.

As far as numbers go I wouldn't know. It will depend on how you build the motor. The rule of thumb is the more you spend the faster you go. I have seen a statement here called "cubic dollars" which is all too true.

Have fun!

What is the intended purpose of the motor?  What is the current casting numbers on the heads?  Stock 454 heads don't have poor flow design like the SBC's have, they can support a good amount of power.  Your TH350 (unless it has been rebuilt recently) isn't going to last long behind the 454 unless you just plan on driving it...

looks like your definetely on the right track. is that comp 270 a solid lifter or hydraulic? as captkaos said get the casting numbers off your heads. pull the valve covers and they should be casted right in. 6 or 7 digit number IIRC. if it ends in 781 or 049 you have a nice set of large oval ports worth keeping. there are some good closed chambers out there as well but I'm not familiar with the numbers. i had a 454 w/ stk 781 heads, eddy perf intake, comp 294 solid cam and roller rockers backed by a 700R4 w/ 2800 stall, stg 2 shift kir, 3.73 gears and 26" drag radials. it ran 13.7 at 100 mph and got 16-17 mpg ( imp gallons ) driving to the track with a 750 edelbrock performer carb. made approx 425 hp. check gear ratio as static22 said also, that will have a huge impact on performance if you have 3.08s or worse 2.56 or 2.73s.
