Top End Kit
« on: August 17, 2008, 07:30:51 pm »
Does anyone think this would be an acceptable new top end kit for a 350 290hp gm crate engine? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=TFS-K314-500-450&autoview=sku The engine has about 15,000 mi on it already. Would it be more feasible to rebuild and stroke it, or go with this kit. I am still workin on finding a new tranny, but this is next on my list. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks

Metalman, This is not a good plan for your engine. Your engine has 8.5:1 compression with 76 cc heads. Changing to those heads will increase your compression a little bit (aprox. .2) You really need to get 64cc heads to boost the compression up. That is a pretty hairy camshaft, great for a weekend cruiser/dragstrip engine. It's going to require 10.0:1 compression at least! This kit on your engine will turn it into a DOG! You will lose the lowend power because of the cam & the lack of compression/cylinder pressure will make for no topend to amount to anything. If you want more power out of what you have without changing pistons, crank, ect. Get some 64cc heads & a cam in about the 228-230 duration @.050 480-490 lift., a Performer RPM or comparable intake, headers with a dual 2 1/4"-2 1/2" exhaust. rear gears in the 3.40-3.73 range should make for a good combo. Listen to Haulin It.  That cam is huge!  A cost effective way to increase compression, port flow, and thus power potential would be a set of vortec L31 heads (which have 64cc chambers by the way).  Then stab in a cam in the size range of what Haulin It suggested and you'll be golden.  This is what I'll be doing, as soon as funds allow, to my Goodwrench 350, which is the same engine as yours minus the 222/222 cam.

I've heard a few good things about that Holley top-end kit.  I've heard that the heads are awesome too.  I'm not sure what the cam and intake are, but I do remember it's supposed to make a good bit of power.

At the moment, I have an edelbrock 600 carb, performer intake, headers, true dual with flows, and soon to be 6al ignition. So do you think that a good set of 64cc heads and a descent cam would kick up this engine a bit? How do the 64's do on pump gas? Is plus or premium a must? I am looking for something over 350, preferably around 400 horse. And is it too late to swap out the cam without replacing the bearings? I dont know how many miles it is before its too late. Thanks for everyone's input on everything.

64cc heads with flattops will run just fine on pump gas.  I'd run a bigger carburetor.  I'm doin a vortec headed 350 with flattops, i'm putting beehive springs on my heads so I can go over .450 cam safely.  My heads were shaved down to 60cc for maybe .2 points of compression.  But with compression, as I learned, You're gonna need enough cam to let the pressure out.  If you had a 383 stroker, I'd run that 72cc head.
