How do I set up a new carrier to replace my G80 unit?
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:53:08 am »
I'm replacing the G80/carrier with an open diff + a mini spool.  I'll be changing axles sometime in September.  I was planning to go full spool, but everybody keeps telling me it's more trouble than it's worth and it seems to be more expensive too.  I was told that all I needed to do was set the side play or something like that with shims.  I'm using my same gears and stuff, I'm just changing the carrier and adding a mini spool.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

You need it setup correctly.  Side play isn't the only variable.  The carrier is changing completely, which requires all the key pieces to be checked.

Putting a mini spool on it isn't a good idea in my opinion, unless you plan to trailer it to/from the track.  Spools put alot more stress on components and if you break and axle, it is most likely going to leave the truck.  Why are you trying to go the cheap route?  Wouldn't you rather go the safe route?  A limited slip will have just enough holding force for most applications.

Team, Here is how I go about it... Buy a shim kit for the carrier bearings. The kit I like the best, I've gotten at Reider Racing. They have a Two part shell that you put the thin shims in the middle (it makes them easier to put in). Find someway to lock the pinion (flat plate with the u-joint strap holes drilled in it, welded to a bar/pipe clamped to the frame, leaf spring, ect. so there is no movement. Mark a tooth on the ring gear & the Two intersecting on the ring gear (some ratios don't matter, but it can't hurt). Mount a dial indicator on the housing, touching a pinion gear tooth, rock one way, zero the indicator & rock the other way. This is your backlash. Unlock the pinion, remove the indicator & rotate the ring gear a half turn & repeat the lock pinion & dial indicator. Your goal is to put the ring gear back in this spot (typically .006-.012) it is before you take it apart. Start with the shims that you have, on the same side they are on & see what backlash you get (many times it is close). Add/subtract Right & Left aiming for the number you had in the beginning & add .001-.003 to each side to preload the bearings, this will make getting the carrier a little tight going in. Adding to the Left will increase the backlash, subtracting will increase it. Tighten the carrier bolts each time you check (it can change the number) & rotate . Once you have the same number you started with your done. Others may have a different plan, do a little research. Lorne

I forgot to mention that I'm not driving this truck anymore.  It's only trailered to where it needs to go.  Other than tuning the carb on the backroads, it'll never see street time.  We have another truck project coming up for the street.  The reasoning for the cheap route is lack of money at the moment.  I guess I'm just in a hurry to get this thing running good and back on the track.
So it looks like whichever route I go, I'll need it setup by a pro.  Can I just install a mini locker(auburn type) in place of the G80 or do I need to have an open carrier?  Is there any benefit to a full spool over a limited slip or locker?  This is a "track-only" truck that just needs to "hook'n'book".
Lorne - That doesn't sound too hard, but I may need to see it done by a pro first before I'm confident enough to try it.

Man! I don't know what I was thinking.  For some reason, I was dead set on locking the axles together permanently.  I realize that I would like to have a LSD or locker for the days when we have our club meetings(1/8 from my house).  Where can I get a good locker or LSD for a good price?  I bought my Eaton w/4.10's for $500 on ebay a few years ago and paid $330+ to get them installed.  I'm not looking to go that deep into this one.  I was hoping to maybe find a nice clutch type posi for around $350.  I'm keeping my 4.56's.

$350-ish sounds reasonable for just the LSD buying new from a dealer on Ebay or from a place like Randy's Ring and Pinion.
