Summit Racing Headers?
« on: September 25, 2008, 01:08:49 pm »
I have an 86 GMC K15 350 motor with 3in body lift 4 in suspension lift, I have been hearing stories about long tube clearance problems, has any one tried the summit racing headers with a 3in collector, they are the same as the dynomax and flowtechs. 86003 or 31500flt

Have you talked to Summit? They've been helpful in the past but it's been a while since I've had a reason to call them.

i have a set on my 79 k10 and had no problems at all. however you have a body lift and i dont so that may be an issue, but i dont see why it would be. one thing to keep in mind though is i suggest gettin the copper gaskets. those ones they give you burn out pretty quick. i installed a set of copper ones and they work great.
Are you just gonna lay there and bleed or are you gonna cowboy up?

Do you have any clearance issues, from what i can tell the summit racing headers are the same design as the dynomax and the flowtech, i plan on getting the cermi-coated headers, i have shorty headers and do not like them, but i keep hearing that long tubes may not clear drive shafts or shackles, this is going to be a street truck that goes on the beach once in a while. Do you have any pics of your headers on your truck?

I have the Flowtech 11500 (think that is right) long tubes and I have clearance issues on the passenger side shackle.

What kind of issues and what did you do to fix them?

If going with shorty headers instead, i am thinking about the summit headers, how would that work with flanges and stuff?

The collector was hitting my spring shackle.  I havent fixed them yet (heating torch to bend slightly{thanks Blazin}).  I even tried a set of shackles from ORD that are 1.5" longer but still didnt clear.

As far as the Summits go, I put a set on my brother's 1990 k10.  The collector flanges are the same as the manifolds.  They are designed to bolt in place of the manifolds.  I prefer long tubes so that if I want to "uncap" them, I just unbolt and move the pipes over.

My buddy bought a set of summit headers, they told him they would be the exact same as dynomax.  They hit the spring shackles.  He hasn't done anything with them and I'm not sure what he will do?  They don't seem to be consistant between sets.
