What do I need to do about a severely flooded engine?
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:03:28 pm »
I tried to start my truck today and it wouldn't start for nothin'.  I floored the pedal and it would try to kick on but not really.  It just cranked and cranked.  I gave up and just used my other truck.  I came back about a hour or so later and tried again.  It did the same thing, but this time I finally got it to rev once or twice.  But it was rough as could be and died as soon as I released the pedal.  I went and looked under the hood and didn't notice anything out of place.  So I decided to check the fuel pressure and it was only at 5-6psi, so I shut the pump off(it's electric).  Then I heard a pissing sound around the intake and sure enough, the front barrels were full of gas and it was all leaking down into the motor.  I'm not sure how much has gone down the intake, but I'm betting a lot.
I'm sure I need to change the oil ASAP right?  Should I replace the needles/seats too?  What needs to be done?  Is it possible that I did some damage with the all that gas in the motor and trying to start it?

Team, I would pull the spark plugs & blow air into the cylinders, leaving room around the blowgun for the fuel/fumes to get out. Put new plugs in it & change the oil. From there you should be good to go assuming that nothing is really wrong with the carb. Has it been sitting for a while? It would take quite a bit of gas to hydo-lock the engine, bend valves & stuff, but it is possible. Lorne

The truck hasn't been sitting long, maybe about a day or so.  I noticed the front bowl was full, so I'm guessing it's either the float or the needle/seat assemble is bad.  I'll do what you said Lorne.  Thanks.
