dash speaker info...
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:15:05 pm »
I want to buy two small round speakers and fab my own bracket to mount them where the stock center dash speaker used to go.  Who has done this, and what size speakers did you buy?  I have seen the dual speaker kits for sale at various web sites, but i would rather make my own so I can choose my speakers.  Also, i'm curious, What size is the old stock speaker?  Is it a 4x10?

Kenny, stock size for the center speaker was 4x10.  If you have the original mount you could use it as a template to make a dual speaker.

Thanks man!   I've got an old 4x10 around here somewhere.  Good idea, I'll do that.

I'm looking to do this very same thing -- mount two 3-1/2" 2-way speakers in the center 4 x 10 opening using a self-made bracket.  How did yours come out?  Pictures?

Here's where it is in my build thread,  about half way down the page:

http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=9090.150

Look at the front of the dash opening, I screwed down two metal tabs that clip to the dash and reused the original screw holes to secure the back of it to the dash, the front just clips in and I didn't modify the dash at all.  I think 4" speakers would fit no problem as the 3.5"s had room to spare since they're bottom mounted.  They do sound great, they raised the sound staging up where it should be in the front.

VERY NICE!  Thanks for directing me right to the post of your pictures.  I like the use of plexiglas as the mounting bracket -- nice touch.  What brand speakers did you use?  I can find Infinity REF3022CF and Polk DB351 speakers locally.  Both sets are two-way and I would think that either set would work.

I bought Blaupunkt GTx352 3.5's from crutchfield.  All my speakers are blaupunkt.  they sound good and are relatively cheap.  I never tried them before but I like them now I have them.  They're not super powerful or anything like that but they're really nice for the money IMO.  I bought everything but my amp there.  They sound good right off of the head unit.  My amp only powers the 6x9's and 6.5's.  Get at LEAST a 2 way speaker because the sound has to go through the dash pad which only has those little holes and you need more treble to carry through it and not sound muffled.
