Need a more powerful fan motor for the heater?
« on: October 14, 2008, 09:05:11 am »
Now that its' getting colder I'd like to install a more powerful fan motor for the heater.  Seems like the one I have as well as most of my older Chevy's have wimpy fan motors.

I was wondering if anyone knows if a newer fan motor has more power, maybe a better fan blade?  And it will still bolt into my 1975 GMC Jimmy.  I installed a new heater core and all new hoses, etc. just need to pump up the air flow to get some of that heat on my feet!

I'm running the top off through the winter so I could really use some more heat in the open air cab.

Thanks!

Mike

Is your truck AC or Heater only.
The later model fans should work better from say 87-91 and should bolt in.
I have heard the (specifically) a 1994 pickup fan will work, but I think it is only for the non AC truck.

Heater only, kind of has air conditioning... the natural kind... blows real cold in the winter, not so cold in the summer...  :)

Sounds good, I was thinking most of these would be interchangeable.  I'll pull mine out and take it to the local salvage your and try to find a newer motor/fan that matches.

I would get it new from the parts store.  I would think the manufacturers would have updated the motors by now.

Now there you go giving out good advice again... for some reason my brain didn't even think about checking with NAPA

Since I have to go to the wrecking yard anyway I'll check to see if non-air motors are an exact match so when I order a new on from NAPA we'll know it will fit for sure.  Don't want to make my NAPA counterpeople order me something that doesn't fit.  I'm lucky in that my local NAPA team are very helpful.

Thanks!

Difference between an A/C motor, and a non- A/C, is that the squirell  cage(fan blade assemb) is bigger for the A/C models, and the motors have a longer shaft....  So the difference is also noted, the mounting plates are usually shaped differently as well....

It's my understanding, that non-A/C motors should interchange from '67-98(give or take in the years), but the A/C models changed in mounting design through those years...  I have found in some cases big block cars and trucks can have the same mounting and such, but the motors were usually stronger(cage was a size diameter bigger, but with the same depth)....

Dang...

I have a 1986 Suburban I pulled the 454 out of for my Jimmy but it has air conditioning.

Dang, it's parked about 20 feet from my Jimmy, I'll inspect the fan motor and squirrel cage just in case it might fit.

It's getting cold at night and I'm using the Jimmy to drive backand forth to work which is 100 miles one way.  Makes for a cold drive at night.

If you leaving the top off, you might want to locate a few more heater cores around, say under the seat, and run some hoses. It's going to be hard to overcome ambient temperatures below 40* at 60mph in an open cockpit.

I know for a fact that some of the best heaters came in jeeps, but still I was riding with a friend in winter with one of those jeep-bikini-tops and nearly froze at 35*

Good tip, I'll look into this idea.  I've run topless in most of my convertibles for years/decades, basically once the top comes off it isn't going back on again.  Might have a half-cab, soft top made as these have alwasy been a real blessing in Oregon.  We don't get much rain in the Mojave Desert but we do get a little, plus once in a while we get a little snow...
