Glove box latch removal
« on: November 08, 2008, 09:50:39 pm »
For the life in me I cannot figure out removing a glove box latch from one glove box to replace the broken one on my 86 2500. It is a non lock and has a pin hole in the center. I know I've done this in the past but I am drawing a blank this evening. I played with it for about 45 minutes before putting it down so I wouldn't break it. What is the secret combination? Thanks.

This must be something not well known perhaps.
A friend told me to put a tiny allen wrench into the small hole in the center while trying to spin the cylinder on the opposite side. I found that if I put it in the latched position while putting presser on the allen wrench it eventually let me unscrew the cylinder to remove. I then installed it onto the glove box I am using also in the latched position. I dont know what combination you would use with a locking cylinder. It was a little aggravating trying to figure it out even with the destroyed cylinder I was replacing to look at, it was less than obvious. Something this simple ran me a little hard, I almost changed the whole glove box instead.

I use an awl or allen wrench (used a paper clip once also)  with a key, you need the key to get it apart.  Same basic principle...

on the non-locking model you have to press this (White arrow) to release the cylinder.
On a locking model, you press this (white arrow) and insert the key with it depressed, and then it will come out.  The key will hold it down once you've inserted it.

Here's where it is (white arrow above) when the lock is assembled (black arrow):
