General Discussion / Re: Will a 73-87 fit in a Shipping Container?
« Last post by berserk on August 14, 2025, 06:12:32 am »
No help to push really but I have a 12k winch in the front and a master kill switch on the dash. I also have rear sliding glass which I am WAY to big to fit through but could trip the kill switch through it and it cuts power to everything on the truck.
This is why I want to at least get a double door so I can hook my winch up through the container onto another truck. I had also thought about just leaving it in neutral. Harbor Freights has some wheel chocks on sale, I'll get some today maybe.

Thanks for the suggestions, I do almost everything alone so getting tips from guys like you who figured out the easiest way is fantastic!

Do you have enough help to just push the truck inside? If so you could just do that & block the wheels once its in position and leave the truck in neutral.
If not, here is how i'd go about it.
Drive the truck in nose first, stopping once the front fenders are inside leaving you room to open the doors.
Block the wheels & leave it in neutral.
Jack up the back so the wheels are off the ground.
See how the ramps /  blocks are set up in Da67goatman's picture?  Reverse that set up so the blocks are away from the container and behind the wheels of the truck.
Lay the ramps on top of the block so that they are level with the container but under the rear wheels of the truck (which is jacked up so the wheels are off the ground).   Slowly lower the truck down onto the ramps and push it inside.
Once the truck is inside you can crawl under it and block the rear wheels & leave the truck in neutral.
Years ago I parted out a lot  of trucks in a 30' x 10' self storage unit.  I got pretty creative in finding ways to work around tight spaces.

Anyone know of any videos or instructions on how to R&R the rack and sector gear on a non-tilt column?

You can epoxy a magnet in the pan if you want one in there.

Glad you got it operational!  Marking splines is always one of those "now where did this go" thing...

You're probably happy it's not a tilt. A lot more work... ::)

Thanks guys.  I got the steering wheel pulled and the turn signal switch out of the way tonight.  I'll keep digging and see what I find.

My rack and sector broke on a tilt wheel, due in part to loose column bolts.

Replaced it but later suffered a stiffness in turning the ignition tumbler.

Thought it failed again but it was the ignition switch.

Yours may be hanging up and broke the rack.

Does anyone know if contact cleaner like Doxit would help? I'v seen it work wonders.
