2 Door Questions
« on: December 11, 2008, 05:03:18 am »
Well, I'm trying to change out my hinge pins....they appear to be bucked at the bottom.  The nipple has 2 flat spots on it, and a wad of metal up by the hinge itself by both flats....how, with hand tools, do i go about getting these out?  I can't tell if it's got a c-clip on it or what, but it appears to be kinda bucked to hold it there....?

the other is, i'm gonna refinish my interior door panels...how do i get the window crank handle off?  thanks for your help!

You need to remove the clip (the jesus clip) behind the crank.

Either use the tool or a pick tool to pop it off. Also a paint can opener ground to a point works mint.

If there are retainers on your pins remove them and drive them out. If someone modified them you may have to cut them off and get replacements

Vile:  Is that the REAL name for that clip - the jesus clip?  Or is it named that way, because, that is what you say when you are trying to remove it? :D

Thermal Izod - I use a thin rag to slip behind the window crank and "catch/push" the clip out.  A trick I learned from the audio folks.

I removed my hinge pins by cutting the pins with a reciprocating saw and using a long metal punch to hammer the two remaining pieces out.  I did this with the hinges removed from the vehicle.

hahaha, ok i got the hinge pins done today.  I had to remove the door to make room to bang out the pins.  you can see in my pics, it looks like they used an air chisel to create a flange to hold them in.  I was able to beat the top one out with a hammer, but the tabs on the bottom one needed to be dremiled down so i could pound it out.  the bushing pictured was the best of the four that were in there...unreal.  it's like a new door, no sag, closes 100X's easier.  It still takes a little swing to close it, but not the SLAM it used to.  Barely had to adjust the striker at all...Also note the wear grooves on the pins themselves.

Put the clip back on the window crank first. Then just pop the crank on.
