Hey all. I am going to buy an intake manifold for my 75 C-10 454 automatic truck. Can I get rid of the factory egr system components? Will there be any adverse affects on the way it runs. Should I keep the factory egr stuff. I need to know before I can order an intake manifold. Please help. Thanks James

i did a 350 swap and took out all the emmisions(use to have egr but no more, my intake came with a hole in manifold-edelbrock but also a block off for the egr . im runnin it blocked off) and she has never ran better. only thing i wish was better is the gas mileage but oh well its worth it  hope it helps.

You may have to retard your timing some and you'd lose a wee bit of mileage but that's about it. Plus you lose the opportunity for your intake to get caked up from carbon as badly and getting the EGR stuck open.

Are you building a performance engine and does it have to go through emissions?

Its not super performance but it is a step above stock. It has a comp cams rv cam, lifters, springs, 3 angle valve job with manley keepers. Hooker headers and hooker mufflers. Now I am going to put an aftermarket intake on it. Edelbrock is the most obvious choice. But I am not sure wether to buy the Performer or Performer RPM. Only the Perfromer offers egr provisions but I really want to buy the Performer Rpm Air Gap. No the truck wont ever be emisions tested. I live in MD and if its 20 years old or older, you dont have to get it tested. Thanks again, waiting on more replys before I buy. Jamnjc3

I removed the egr from my sons truck.  I bought an Edelbrock Performer intake with egr provisions, but decided not to use it.  I now have it blocked off - but it is there incase I decide to reinstall it.

You are correct about not requiring emissions if it is 20 years or older, but you have to tag it HISTORIC.  Historic tags put restrictions on the amount you can drive it.  Now I know the police don't actively stop  historic taged vehicles, but they will give you a hard time about it if they pull you over for doing something squirrley  ie... speeding, spinning wheels etc...

Currently, my sons truck is tagged HISTORIC - so far no problems.

Then don't bother with EGR.

Ok thanks. Im going to remove it! With the small mods done to the truck, do you all suggest Performer or Performer RPM?

Mine is tagged Historic also. I have had over a dozen historic tagged cars and trucks and have never had one problem with the police, even when pulled over.

performer vs. performer rpm?

well i think this should be obvious.  depends on what you want to do w/ it.  What cam?
do you want an engine that screams up to higher rpms and get your peak there or do you want to take advantage of lower , or all range of rpms to get some good numbers?

I use the performer.  i have an rv cam, therefore, see great numbers at the lower rpm range--i drive my truck and use it as a truck is intended.   i pull with it.  i have a 3.08 rear, so, the rpms will be in the lower range anyway and its street driven, not at the track. no sense to get the rpms up to the 4k range--no need for a high riser.
