fuel gauge messed up

is it normal for the fuel gauges to go above full? because when i fill my tanks up the needle goes above full so i dont know if its actually that full or if theres something wrong with the guage

mine does the same thing, but when its at empty, its really there, so i trust it when its below 1/2 tank, as its usually spot on down in the bottom half.

Does the gauge react the same way with either tank selected? What does your gauge do when you turn the ignition off? if it drops past "E" then the gauge sounds like it's working ok. The sending units are the culprits that tell the gauge where to go.

ya thats exactly what mine does it only gets messed up above half a tank

yes it does it with both tanks....when the ignition is off it drops past E, one of the tanks and sending units are new

Yeah, I found that out the hard way, went to a buddy's house and I was sitting on "E".  I thought that since my gauge goes past the "F" it must work the same the other way.  Instead, I ran out of gas right in front of his driveway....

It must be pretty common for the fuel needle to go above full with the tank filled. Mine acts the same way. As long as it's correct as it follows the fuel level downward,towards empty, it's working pretty good. I think what we're seeing at full is the fuel sender reaching its upper limit as the fuel tank fills past it.
