mine does the same thing, but when its at empty, its really there, so i trust it when its below 1/2 tank, as its usually spot on down in the bottom half.
Does the gauge react the same way with either tank selected? What does your gauge do when you turn the ignition off? if it drops past "E" then the gauge sounds like it's working ok. The sending units are the culprits that tell the gauge where to go.

I thought that since my gauge goes past the "F" it must work the same the other way. Instead, I ran out of gas right in front of his driveway....
