Hi guys...
Ok, My 86 Chevy K10 has an issue that seems... well... unrepairable by making adjustments. For starters, I want to make it clear that the original Q-jet was replaced by an edelbrock performer of some type. It looks like a 650. Also, the EGR valve has been removed and blocked off in order to make room for the bigger carb. I did not make these changes, its the way it came to me.
The timing set needed replacing when I got it. It still ran, but adjusting the timing was useless, and I had loads of preignition. After the new gear set was installed, I made some carb adjustments and set the timing at 6 deg before TDC. Here is the problem:
When I am running it as it is adjusted by the book, I still get some pinging, more so under heavier load. When I hear it, I can either give it more gas, or let off, and it stops. If I tweak the distributor back a bit (clockwise) the pinging will stop, but it takes away from the trucks power and it bugs me that it strains the engine.
I have been told that better gas, or advancing the valve timing may help the problem temporarily. However it is a terminal issue, and that the engine will need to be rebuilt/replaced soon. Someone please tell me that this can be caused by something I may be missing... I don't feel like installing the new 350 until I have everything I need to complete the front end and tranny at the same time.
