How much for this bare block 350?
« on: December 02, 2012, 03:49:44 pm »
Local guy has a 350 bare block, casting number 3970010. I was told it is a 1971 4 bolt main. It has never been bored over. Guy might be interested in selling it, but I have not asked pointedly yet. Just curious, what would this be worth, or what is a good offer? I want to rebuild the engine in my K10, but want to be able to use it when needed, so I was going to buy a separate block.

Just a block with nothing else? $50 in my opinion if you can trust it is good.
If we lived a bit closer I would give you a block. It would cost you more than $50 to come get it though. ;D

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

Agreed a bare 350 block and you're taking his word for it? Look carefully at the cylinder walls and the main bearing bore. Measure as well.

No way to guarantee the block isn't cracked without paying for it be magnafluxed. But I guess all used blocks are a gamble to a certain degree.

other thing is are the mains marked, or were they kept in order?
In my opinion if you are looking for a motor to rebuild get one that runs good, just tired, or smokes. That way you are 99.9% sure it won't yield a big suprise when you go to make it fresh again.

So if I am looking for an engine that takes roller lifters, that is only the 87 and newer engines right? I understood that basically if it has a one-piece rear main, then the engine has a hydraulic roller cam, is that right?

One piece rear main seal began in 1986. The 1987 up would be a one piece rear main seal, but it may or may not actually have had a roller cam installed or even machined for a factory roller cam. Also, some of the early one-piece blocks may not have been drilled for using an engine driven fuel pump.
