loose steering
« on: March 23, 2013, 08:43:42 pm »
Hi guys, Ive got a 1973 k10 chevy truck. Not sure of the mileage, guessing around 150,000 miles. Everything up front is all original to my Knowledge. Its got a Dana 44 up front with a 3 inch suspension lift and 33x12.50 tires on it. Good running truck I have had it for 3 or 4 years and have noticed that the steering has got some play in it. Its loose. Was wondering what I could do or check and look at to figure out why it's like this. I am guessing my steering box has got some slop in it but how can I tell for sure? Thanks, any input on things to check are well appreciated.

If your tie rod ends, and drag link are tight. Turn the wheel back and forth, if the tires don't respond almost instantly then the steering box would be the likely culprit. Watch the steering column under the hood / through the wheel well while the wheel is being turned, the steering arm should move at the same rate no hesitation.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Saginaw steering boxes are adjustable.  Google - adjusting a saginaw steering box.  It's fairly easy.  I would also, as noted, checkout your steering components.  A little slop in a few steering parts can cause a very sloppy steering wheel.

Your frame could also be cracked which results in flexing and a loose steering wheel.
