loose shift lever

Hello, my 4x4 1980 Blazer has a mechanic gearbox. The problem is that both shift levers are loose, they have a slight movement in every position, including neutral.
My mechanic told me this is normal, but i doubt it.
What do you think?

If it is a manual 4 speed, they are loose, the t-case shifter can be considered loose, but you can adjust it some...
