BBC A/C brackets for R4 style compressor
« on: June 26, 2010, 07:15:02 pm »
I've got an '85 K10 Silverado, I swapped out the 305 with a 454 and would like to hook my A/C back up. I've got the R4 compressor (short style), I need brackets for the BBC.
Did they ever use this compressor on the big blocks? I've been calling and searching junkyards and can't find anything. Anyone know what they would have been installed on from the factory with a big block setup?

or aftermarket - homemade brackets?

Since the A/C setup worked fine before the engine swap I don't want to switch compressor styles to the longer one.

Thanks,
Greg

Heres a link for the whole set up.
Is that the syle AC comp you have?

If so there are 2 brackets #10187612 and #10187613.

Here is the bracketry for the 454. The A6 compressor was used

I believe OP wants to use his short compressor on the 454.

Then he will have to use a late model set up because the V-belt system used the A6. The late model bracketry will work but will be serpentine.

I adapted the 305 A/C brackets onto a 502 when we put it in my friend's '83 Caprice quite a few years ago. Worked out great & really wasn't that hard if you have some basic skills & desire. The owner of the car gets asked quite often about "What year/vehicle did that bracket come from?"
We never discharged the air while doing the swap, the hose that goes across the engine looks a little shorter than it should be but has never been a problem...that's been 10 years ago or so. There are several other parts on it that someday will make someone scratch their head a bit. The transmission crossmember is from a mid 90's Crown Vic (dual humps made for the cats) with the original mount portion cut off of the Caprice & welded to the Crown Vic one. The mount portion has the GM part number...I'd love to be a fly on the wall when someone goes to the dealer & orders the "double hump" crossmember & gets the goofy angled stock one.  :D Go for it! The compressor in the link I provided is an R4. Its just uses the serpentine belt. I'm pretty sure the same brackets would work.

Only problem is that they charge an arm and two legs for them.

With the prices they charge, I would make my own also.

Thanks for the info guys.
I figured a serpentine setup was the factory answer, but I'm not sure I want to switch over right now so I think I'm going to make my own brackets to get it to work.
I was thinking maybe some rods with adjustable spherical style ends, I've seen some street rods hang compressors that way - think it would work?

All I know about making the AC brackets is that they should be quite strong.
Last time I made some up, the brackets were too flimsy and caused me nothing but grief.
