automatic trans floor shift conversion

How easy would it be to install a floor shifter? I found a few universal cable operated ones that look nice... I've always liked floor mounted shifters more appealing than on the column.


Is it a pretty easy mod, or would I have to go into the tranny at all?

It's not too bad. I've got a B&M ratchet in mine; all I had to do was hook up the cable and adjust and mount it to the floor

It's a easy mod to do.  If I remember correctly, you just need a drill and something to make a bigger hole in the floor for the cable to go through.  Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.  I have the Hurst Promatic2 in my truck, it's a ratchet shifter.

So would I have to cut a large hole in the floor? I'm confused on how the cable attaches to the transmission.

Also, back up lights?

I cheated.... I left part of my column shift on and moved it down when I went to reverse  ;D You don't have to make a huge hole; just one large enough to go through the floor. The shifter will cover the hole.

Haha well I want to completely clean up the column... I'm worried I'll have trouble with hooking up the reverse lighting!

I think some shifters, like B&M, come with reverse switch and a neutral safety switch

Not really a hard job at all. The instructions with the shifter will guide you through the whole process. As for reverse lights and neutral safety, just check the feature list on the prospective shifter. It will/should list any and all features the shifter has.

I installed the B&M Hammer in my '71. I mounted it in a custom console I built. But the process is the same as mounting it in the floor. No problems getting it to work.

There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.
