Oil pressure gauge pegged: 85 silverado...
« on: May 23, 2011, 10:12:33 pm »
Fellow Gearheads,

I should've documented my project here as it was happening.  I apologize for that, but to frame in the context of my question...

I have an 85 silverado.  I yanked the original 305 turd and put in a 1974 350 with cam, performer intake, carb and rebuilt heads.  I got the motor to fire this weekend.  Yippee!  Among the many little annoyances I need to correct, is that my oil pressure gauge stays pegged at about 2 o' clock.  My questions....
a. Which sending unit is the right one for this setup?  the one for the 85 305 or the one for the 74 350?
b. Like an idiot, I didnt mark any wires when pulling the 305, so what color wire am I looking for and what does the connector on it look like?  Any pics would be greatly appreciated...

Kurt

If the truck is an 85 then everything associated with your instrumentation should be for an 85.

Thanks, any insight into the wire I need to be looking for?  What sort of plug it might have on the end of it?

On MY stock sending unit, the wire has a 90* bend that presses on the sending unit, similar to how a spark plug wire fits. Go to the tech section and pull up the wiring diagrams and find the color it should be.

Is your truck an 85 silverado with stock oil pressure gauge?

Personally, I prefer Mechanical gauges. I think theyre more reliable, since the electric sending units can go out whenever they want.
found this picture on the internet to show what the connector should look like. Thats the same as my 79. Its an orange wire

Thanks for the pics.  I thought those would solve my issue.  I am unable to locate an orange wire with that type of connector on it.  Although, I swear I remember pulling such a connector off when extracting the 305.  It was a late night.

Does anyone on here have an 85 they can snap a picture of in this area showing the wire, and where it enters the firewall?

Also, is there any way for me to put some juice to the disconnected wires to determine which one is connected to the oil pressure guage?
