Hard shifting 205
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:25:29 am »
My new K30 has an issue with the 205 case. More often than not it is a bear to shift out of 4 wheel high into 2 wheel. Once in a while it shifts out real nice and smooth. When this happens i end up shifting all the way into 4 lo or neutral because I am used to it being hard to shift. It shifts in to lo fine smooth as silk. As for shifting into 4 high it works perfect. Have had it shift out so hard a few times I have to give it the old kick with my right heal. The other thing i have noticed is there is only about a 1/2" between being in 4 high and neutral. Also when its in 2 wheel it rattles almost sounds like its grinding against 4 high a bit.
Any ideas? Thanks Harold.

Try rolling it backwards when it is hard to shift.  Since it is a geared case they usually bind some...

I would change the fluid making sure you have the right fluid in it too and lube up the linkage with some of your weasel pee

Well I took the bolt out, not rusty or dry I greased the fitting again, second time. Sprayed it with weasel pee. still shifts hard most times. once in a while it shifts right out. Coarse I am expecting it to be hard so i go right past 2 hi and into neutral or 4 lo! Still have to put my heel to it once in a while.

The 205s are real sensitive to get out of 4wd back into 2wd when your on pavement or even hard packed dirt, it causes the drivetrain to bind up. If your done wheeling when your trying to get it out of 4wd try unlocking the front axle's hubs & move the truck back & forth to relive the binding in the drivetrain.

I had about the same problem with my 203. I tore it down to find a brass perforated thrust washer had failed. It was extremely hard to get it out of 4 low.

I have had many 205s over the years. Only had one other one that shifted hard, but not this hard. It seems to be coming into it now that I have shifted it out of 4 hi a crap load of times with my heel. If it breaks then I will know what the problem is.
I am not going to get out and unlock and re lock my hubs at all 32 of my driveways plus when I need to shift it into 4 hi to make a hill on the road!
Right where it bolts on to the adapter. Mine and all the 205's I have had in the past has a grease fitting right there.
