« on: November 29, 2008, 12:36:57 pm »
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNEW HOW TO CONVERT MY FULL TIME TO BEING ABLE TO UNLOCK.  I HAVE HEARD OF KITS THAT WILL DO THIS, HOWEVER I HAVE NOT FOUND THEM.

Milemarker part number 501 get at summit for 44.95 or the shaft replacement by mile marker don,t know the part number but Both are fairly easy to install I would go with a new shaft kit so you don't have to deal with the needle bearings with your old shaft. Also need manual hubs too.

With that kit from mile marker do you still have to buy hubs to lock it in 4wd or does everything you need come in the kit and you uses the shifter on the floor to shift in 2wd or 4wd  Sorry for the dumb questions. I also have a 79 looking to convert.

With the kit that Captkaos is referring to you will control your 4wd and 2wd both high and low range from the floor shifter. Basically your loc positions become your 4wd positions.

If you order the 501 kit do you or can you also put the shaft in that 75 chev is talking about? Does someone have a part number for the shaft?

I also have the np-203 and would like to get some manual locking hubs but would like to stick with the 203 instead of swapping out the whole case with either a 205 or 208 and also I need them for a 10bolt front

you can swap out the hubs no problem but you still will be turning the ring and pinion if you don't do the part time swap

He must of sold it. just swapping the hubs you will be still turning everything and your gas millage wont really increase unless you do the swap then you will get better mpg. I'm not sure but i think tire wear will also slow down in the front

well as far as mpg i get like 9-11 and that alone is kind of a pain so if i were to swap out which case would be better the 205 or the 208?

you don't need to swap the t case. just get the kit and put it in. but if you wanted to swap i would go with the 205

Personally I would just put in the locking hubs and forget about the conversion to the t-case. I have a converted 203 and plan on switching it back to full time. The reasons are very simple first if the front hubs are disconnected yes you will be spinning the ring & pinion but that is actually a good thing for lubrication purposes. The gas mileage is not that critical once the hubs are unlocked and neither is the tire wear. The big bonus is the 203 in fulltime form has the ability to differentiate between the front and rear axles. When you install the conversion that ability is lost and wear of the drivetrain parts is considerably more. So to me the best of both worlds is to have the locking hubs installed but not the conversion to the t-case.
