Power windows as seen on Two Guys Garage
« on: December 11, 2008, 10:09:35 am »
Has anyone seen the Two Guys Garage episode where they converted the manual windows on a 39 chevy to electric? The new electric windows were actuated with the old window handles. So in essence, it still looked like manual windows, but with electric convenience.  I have gone to their website, but they don't list the manufacturer of the conversion. Anybody record the episode or have the info?

Just thought it would be cool to try this on my 76.

I think one of the nice things about power windows is not having that annoying window crank hitting your leg but I never saw the episode so I can't help ya on what they used. I suppose you could email them to find out.

Hm I don't know about using the handles but I do know that most conversion kits for eons now use the splined shaft that the handle usually attaches to. The handle is removed and a gear attaches to the shaft, of which a toothed belt goes around, and wraps around another gear on the new electric window motor mounted else where on the door. I'm not sure why more OEM setups aren't like that as it seems much more compact and simple. They give you caps to cover the hole in the door panel and now you have power windows. Using the belt makes installation fairly more flexible and easier than having to line up hard parts like levers.

They probably used the switch like pictured here, they mount to the door but the original handle attaches to it:

I can get these from OPP for about $250.

I just looked at my doors (door panels are still off) and there is more than enough room for those switches to mount through the stock crank mounts with stock power windows so yea, it would work.

AutoLoc also sells those switches and I think they are about 200 a pair.

I like the idea of these, but do they have provisions for working the passenger window from the driver's side?
