there's a lot of articles if you google it with pics. If you wanna remove the upper jacket you need to remove the pins. You can either use a bolt and some vice grips or the tool for the job.

the piece that's still connected into the turn signal stalk...

and, here's the piece that's connected with a pin.  it's the smaller round lighter item with a copper colored center on the bottom left-hand side near the wiring.  it's like that on the rear side too.  if i remember correctly, it has something to do with holding the turn signal in as well.  not positive on this.  just going by memmory, but know it's holding me up.

i have alot of things off, even those four bolts on the bottom of the column and i still can't get any slack in the wires that hold the large white piece.  nor do i see how you remove it.  i also notice that rod is supposed to fit into a divot in the switch.  it will not stay in there and i don't see anything to hold it in place even when everything is put back together.  i'm trying to get this thing firing soon as i'm going to be moving out of state.  if i don't get this fixed soon is there a way just to bypass all the ignition and use the truck without the lock and rack, whatever broke in the first place?

I'm not really sure what you are saying you are stuck on. You should either read some articles or buy a book on gm steering columns if you are having a lot of difficulty with it. There are tons of articles with pix just google it.
