How hard is it to paint gloss black?

I'd really like to see my truck in gloss black when its all said and done. I might attempt to do this myself in my shop. From what I have heard your body work has to be perfect. Any light you experts can shed on this subject? Thanks, Andy

Any flaw will be visible in black especially in the sunlight. I would never do a black truck outside of a paint booth. If uyou have to wet sand and buff black it may come out looking good until the sunlight hits it. White is the easiest color and most forgiving.

Sorry Vile I think what I meant to say was block sanding and then more block sanding til ya get it just right then block sand some more. Then it will come out nice.

All body panels perfectly strait. prime the heck out of them then block sand until your finger prints are gone. Then prime the crap out of it again, then block sand until your fingers are gone. Then several more coats of primer, and wet sand that.

As you can tell, there's a lot of prep work involved. I sprayed my 70 Monte black and it took forever to get it close to being ready. It looks the best when it's clean though.

thanks for the help guys.....hmm...well, seems like alot of work for my shop conditions though. i thought about making a booth with a 2x4 structure and plastic for the top and sides to keep the dust out. but black sounds like alot of work....not sure i want to put that much effort into the paint process and it would probably turn out crappy with my luck anyways if i did. i cant really think of any other color that could make a 73-80 look good.....maybe gold or pewter? Thanks Andy

If you do make a temporary spray booth, just use 1 x 3 with 3mil or 6mil poly. It's cheaper.

wow. they all look good. I love your black truck JR and Chevyrado's truck are beautiful too! I really like they gold. i think it would look great with black tinted windows and a lift. Is gold hard to paint? i would figure since it is somewhat close to white(far as lightness) it would be about the same. Im not saying im going to do a half job on my body work but i'm not so sure that im good at it. Thanks Andy

Well as far as spraying the actual paint black would be easier than gold. Gold and silver are about 80% or more metallic. The more metallic the more Chance of metallic sags, or tiger striping. strips of light and darker coloring. But they do show allot less sins from the prep stages.

I like white, here's my old '77
I painted that truck in body class and it wasn't too bad at all and looked pretty good when I got done. It was an easy color to work with. It was ford ultra white, dunno the code it was the brightest paint the color guy could come up with and it looked like it glowed on a cloudy day.
