79 gms 1 ton Dually "Power Parts"
« on: January 15, 2009, 09:38:53 am »
Here is the list of power parts I`ve come up with so far..any other recomendations, or how you think this stuff will work together?
The truck is a 79 gmc Dually, being used for daily towing of a 6000lb trailer. The motor is bone stock at the moment ( 36000 kms) the tranny is the ole 4speed with the granny low ( can`t remember the actual model number) I don`t want it to struggle so much especially with little hills, and it would be nice if it could pull our "monitor hill" without dragging me down to 65 or 70 kmh.

-Lunati VooDoo 60100lk cam and lifters
-Edelbrock performer intake
-Dual exhaust 2.5" with flowmasters and an "H" pipe
- maybe a set of Hedman headers, don`t have part number.

I`m still not totally sold on headers, I`ve been reading that they only really come into play at higher rpms. I shift this truck right now at 4000 to 4200 rpms that is if I`m stating out with a big uphill. I need to shift at 4200 so I can hit second gear at about 2000 rpm or so other wise it seems to not have any grunt and pings quite badly if I lug it too much. ( I dropped the timing a degree again yesterday, will see if it helps the pinging department) but mostly I try to shift at around 3000 to 3200 rpms. oh and I cruise on flat ground 100 kmh at 2750 rpms.

Any suggestions are appreciated
Ron

Is the motor the oringinal stock to the truck or rebuilt stock recently?
The trans in a SM465 with Granny Low so there is a HUGE rpm drop from L to 1st.  Are you refering to L as first?
65kmph = 40mph, that isn't that bad for a huge truck pulling a trailer.
What are you wanting to pull the hill at?

Headers increase low end power as far as general headers go.
Cam looks find for pulling

Yes run the headers. I would ditch that trans and switch over to an automatic. What do you have for gears? Is it 2 or 4wd?

hey guys thanks for some quick replies. I was referring to 1st gear as first gear. I like that bull low as it has "some" uses. In loose snow with ice underneath, it`s nice to get the truck rolling slowly, then shifting to 1st. That dang trailer is a brute to pull (500 gallons of water) and can be hard to get moving in loose snow conditions, with out spinning out. The rear gears are 4.10`s and it`s 2 wheel drive. oh and yeah it is the original motor to the truck. I was hoping to pull that hill at least 90 kmh, my 07 chevy with the 5.3 will pull it up that hill at that speed, but I don`t want to use that truck, it`s too nice too beat up and besides it`s way to light and that trailer pushes that new truck around too much.
Are the headers going to make much of a difference for my application? getting the truck/trailer combo up to 80kph isn`t that hard but from 80 to 100kph definitely takes a bit and if I don`t have it above 2500 rpm ( 95kph )when a small hill comes along it really drags my speed down.
The problem with that monitor hill is, I get water in for the trailer tanks about a mile and a half maybe 2 milesfrom the bottom of the hill. When I pull onto the highway after getting water, she`s too the mat, shifting 4000 rpms just to try to get to 90/95kph before the incline starts to drag me down to 60/ 65kph. If I can get a run at the hill and hit her at 120kph, it still pulls me down to just under 80 kph, but I`d rather not get that load of water going that fast.
sorry for the long winded responce, just trying to give you guys my perspective of the situation.

Is this a SB or a BB?  Just curious... because I would think with that gear you should have no problem with a 454 unless it is one steep hill.

I didn't look up the cam so I thought I would ask.  My 454 with the 3.21 rear has no problem on any hill I have encountered pulling my car trailer with something big on it, guessing 6500 lbs usually...  Actually it is almost like it is not there calmingly pulling it.

Sorry guys, the motor is a sb350, and monitor hill is what we call this one big hill in the area that the highway goes up and over.
