Going to Obamaville for the inauguration
« on: January 19, 2009, 06:31:17 pm »
Call me crazy.  Admit me to an institution.  Call a shrink for me.

Yes, I'm going to D.C. for the Inauguration.  I am leaving around 2am tonight.  The subway opens up at 3:30am. I hope to be on the first train in.

Being the history finatic that I am, I have been going to every Inauguration since my days at George Mason University, only 20 miles away from D.C.  1989 George Sr was my first.  Been to both Clinton's and both W's.  Now I'll be going to Barry's.

I have my backpack packed with snacks, cameras, tripod, mp3 player, kindle ebook reader, book, drinks, gloves, ear muffs, chap stick, 500 mm zoom lens, sunglasses (even though they are calling for snow), etc... I don't have a reserved seating ticket so I don't have to worry about going through security checkpoints.  That's why I can take my backpack.

Wish me luck.  I am off to bed in a bit.  1:30 am will be here in a hurry.

Good luck. I hate politics so bad I don't think I've ever even watched one on TV

There's a lot about politics that needs reworking, however, I take pride in the fact that no other country has a peaceful transfer of power like we do.  There's a lot to be said about that. I don't think people realize what they witness when they watch Inaugurations.

Be safe and good luck. It is history and even though I didnt vote for him, I will support him and keep him in my prayers for the guidence he needs. Same as I did for Bush and those before.

Sgt I am hoping you have a plan have you checked what time they will let you on the Mall?

My office is a block from the White House and we got a email last week stating that since we are in the Security Zone no one will be admitted between 3 am and 8 am so I took a vacation day not in the mood to deal with what will go on tomorrow

No need to call, Don, I am up.  It's 2am and I am outta here.  I'll post pics later.
I"ll be about 1/2 mille away from the swearing in, if it snows, my pics won't be any good.  If it doesn't snow, well, with me taking the pics, even with a 500mm lens, my pics won't be any good.  ;D

This is a big deal for you Americans, eh?  I can't understand all the hooplah of seeing a new leader take power but if it excites you, power to you.  I must say though, from what I've seen of Obama, he seems pretty cool.  Even though I consider myself a conservative, if I were able to vote in the USA I probably would have cast a ballot for him.  Really though, I'm just glad the disaster known as George Bush is done.  Good luck to Obama and all my friends down south!

Actually, I think I could get my US citizenship if I had the urge.  My mom is an American and I think that makes the process easier, not sure though....
