question about beds
« on: January 25, 2009, 01:34:43 pm »
hey all I'm getting my truck ready to paint. Getting tired of brown . So i want to change the color. I'm thinking of a dirty white. But anyways back to me question I don't want to take the bed off the frame but I don't want to be able to see brown when i look down at the back of the cab. Has any of you changed the color with out pulling the bed off. Were you able to see the old color down there. and can i unbolt the front of the bed and take that off when the bed is still on there?
thanks jay

It would probably take less time to unbolt the bed from the frame and slide it back than it would to unbolt the front peice, and remove it. It sounds like a good thought tho. I may look into that when I paint my dually. Interested to see what we come up with here.

No you won't be able to do that. It would take forever to try and wrench all the bolts out, break apart the seam sealer and since the bedsides bolt on over it you'd have to pretty much destroy it. Why not just unbolt the bed and slide it back?

yea them front panel bolts are hard to get to even when the bed is in peaces lol so just unbolt it or just cut the bolts off because you might run into some trouble but just slide it back and you will be good  ;)

Ditto on just unbolting the bed and sliding it backward. It really does not take that long.

Yeah I know that sliding it back would be the best way. But alot of the bolts are rusted up. So i was just thinking of another way. I saw them bolts in the front  broke a bunch of them lose. The only prob I see is pushing the bed sides apart far enuff   to get the front panel out.  Well if i do it I will post some pics.

You can't get any helpers?  I don't see taking the front panel off at all while the bed is bolted down.  And the only way to get the front panel out the top is to remove at least one bed side.  We took my long bed off in a few minutes with just 3 people, but we used 4 people to put it back once it was painted up ;D.  You can also take the back wheels off to be able to slide the bed back a bit farther.

Take this from someone that did this.  Even with all the bolts out, you are going to have a hard time getting the bed sides apart to squeeze out that panel.  Even when I had all the bolts out of the bed sides I had to kick the heck out of them to move them and I had the inner tubs out so with the whole bed intact you are going to mess it up.

good luck

I have sprayed a few rigs with a color change. If your good with a spray gun, turn it down from fan to stream shot and shoot it in there about half trigger you wont be able to tell with out really looking. In other words a body man or truck nut could probably tell, but for a daily driver it will look fine.

Start soaking the bed bolts down now with a good penetrating oil.
