fuel starvation
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:08:41 pm »
my pickup starts fine and after about a minute it cuts off.  i try to give it gas while it's dying and it's too late.  i then decied to hit the gas after i started it up the next time, before it acts up, and it won't take it at all and then it'll quit as soon as i do that.

lol.  any ideas?  other than a fuel filter, which the only one i know of is in the carb, is this a sign of the pump going or do they either work or not work?

Check your fuel volume to the carburetor first. Diconnect the line to the carb and crank the engine with the fuel line in a glass jar. See how much fuel you get in 15 seconds

alright, i'm going to do this saturday.  it's got to either be the pump or choke.  the filter is almost new, unless there is another besides the one in the carb.  just thinking ahead if it was the pump, would an 85 have a mechanical or an electric in-tank?  can you just swap out chokes or do you have to replace the whole carb?  i have an electric choke and the light does come on in the cluster, but that probably doesn't mean a whole lot.

i have an 85 k10 with a 350, BTW.

i think an 85 has a mechanical pump, look under your #2 cylinder---front of engine on passenger side.  Just follow the gas line down from carb and see where it goes.

Make sure your choke is working properly. If its not opening it will flood the engine after it warms some.
