Block ID Number

I'm still looking at buying the Suburban I talked about in my last post. The owner swears it has a 400sbc in it, not the stock 350.

It's a 1987 GMC Suburban 2500 Sierra Classic

I took a stamped number off the front right top of the engine, which I believe is the ID number, but it doesn't seem to fit with the online decoders...

The # is VF145268

Any ideas?

get the number off of the bell housing area of the block.

If its a 400, the harmonic balancer will have a notch taken out of it on the perimeter on one side. If its a complete, smooth ring front to back, all the way around, then I doubt its a 400. If it is, with a 350 harmonic balancer it will have a bad vibration. Does someone here have a 400 balancer pic to show him what it looks like. Im not sure how to describe it.

You can't definitively go by that as there are so many different balancers. Best bet is id the block by it's casting #
