parking on a super steep hill
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:26:43 pm »
Hey sorry if I put this in the wrong section. I wasn't to sure where it would go. So I'm moving into a new place and the only places for me to park is either in the driveway or on the street, both have about 20 degree grade. I'm wondering if i should park with the front of my truck up hill or down hill of if it doesn't matter. I swear I have heard that type of hill will be bad for something I just cant remember, and sorry if this sounds like a noob question.

From my drivers book (many moons ago  ;D ) which ever way you park point the tires towards the curb

to add on to that one you turn them to as if your turning right. since its illegal to park on the left side of the road you have to park on the right turning you wheels to the right will inturn make you turn tight if your trany or e brake gives out

You probably already know this, but...Set the e-brake while in neutral let off the foot brake, then put it in park. It too me 2 years of hanging off the shifter daily to put the tranny in drive before I got that routine seared into my wife's brain.   :o

something else to munch on...you didn't mention if it was a standard trans or auto transmission.

If it is a stick shift, whichever way you park, say, front down hill, I'd place the trans in Reverse and keep it there.  If parking front up hill, I'd leave the trans in first gear.

Always remember with a manual trans, your engine can turn when parked if too much force is placed on it, therefore, you want the transmission to turn the wheels the opposite way the force is applied....in other words, have the trans turn the wheels UPHILL vs. downhill.

You can get the parking brake on tighter by pressing the regular brakes harder while setting the e-brake.
